Developers and Builders beware – The Consumer Code for Home Builders

Added 29 March 2010

Are you a Home Builder? Are you in process of selling new or newly converted Homes? Are those homes being sold under NHBC, Premier Guarantee or LABC New Home Warranty schemes?

If you fulfil all these criteria then you should be aware that as of 1 April 2010 the Consumer Code for Home Builders will apply to all Home Buyers who reserve to buy a new or newly converted home built by a Home Builder under the protection of the Home Warranty Providers listed above.

The 2004 Baker Review and the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) market study into the house building industry dated October 2008 prompted a group of companies within the house building industry to develop a voluntary code of conduct for Home Builders to ensure that all issues raised in those reports relating to customer service and satisfaction were addressed.

Although apparently voluntary, NHBC, Premier Guarantee and LABC will require the Home Builder to follow the Code. Should the Home Builder choose to ignore the Code then sanctions may mean exclusion from register of Home Warranty Providers.

To avoid falling foul of the code then please click here for more information.
